NATURAL HAIR FESTIVAL ZIMBABWE

natural hair festival zimbabwe

We are very excited to announce the happening of the first natural hair festival in Zimbabwe.  It is needed since more and more people are returning to nature and becoming aware of the beauty of having natural hair. The goal for the first of all I will not only be entertained but also to educate, inform and empower the women of Zimbabwe and surrounding countries. Returning to natural is not ” just about hair” it goes much further and deeper. natural hair shows a certain pride. It is about knowing who you really are, it is about knowing where you come from. It is about so much more than just a hairstyle.

The idea of the Natural Hair Festival is from “Unshackled” a UK based organisation that is founded by Professor  Shumba, who is originally from Zimbabwe.  One of the reasons why we think it is necessary to organize this event in Zimbabwe is because we have been able to witness the effects of the denial of natural hair has done to many women.

Many women have adopted the belief that the hair they were born with is “not beautiful”, “difficult to maintain”, “not professional”. We believe that now is the time to empower women and let them know that we have bought into this false belief of the beauty standard forced by the mainstream media. This is not only affecting us as grown women, but it is affecting our youth. By believing this, we tell our children that who they are and what they are born with, the way they look, the color of their skin, is not good enough and is not beautiful. It is time to make a shift. With the Natural hair Festival, we want to start the movement that brings awareness, empowerment, education, and change.

The event in 2020 will be the beginning of many more festivals focussing on this topic. We are not only looking at hosting Festivals, but we will be also bringing education and products as well. Projects to empower not only women but the youth to stimulate entrepreneurship.

This event has a couple of great stakeholders. For one, the famous Zimbabwean “eye doctor” Dr. Guramantunhu, who is also known as an advocate for natural hair. Secondly, the #1 Natural hair therapist and product formulator, Janine van Throo, who will honor us with a workshop during the event. The arts council of the country, Mr. Nicholas Moyo, as well as the famous Singer Dudu Manhega and many more.

Pride rock will be the location for the first Natural hair Festival. Pride rock is a unique location that holds a wellness centre, a little outside the capital of Zimbabwe.

Pride Rock is known for its beautiful view.  For those that have the privilege to spend some time at the wellness centre, imagine waking up at the roar of the lions and watching the sun come up over the beautiful green blanket.

Bring Us Back

bring us back
Strangers entered our house, we treated them like friends.
They saw our sparkling stones, our black liquid gold, our green treasures.
They watched us heal our people, educate them, they listened while we sang our songs.

They took my brothers and sisters, scattered them all over the world, estranged them from us, from who we are, from what we where They took away our us, telling us that what is us, is not good.

And what they took, they made me believe that it was theirs. They tried to tell me that I was cursed, not good, not civilized.

But all this time, that what is inside me, did not sleep. My me, our US, was there, patiently waiting for the time to
